**Please note - this is a novella-length piece of fiction (about 20 thousand words)**

“I had a surge of kinship the first time I saw the manor, perhaps because we’d both seen better days.”

It is 1947. Asharton Manor, once one of the most beautiful stately homes in the West Country, is now a convalescent home for former soldiers. Escaping the devastation of post-war London is Vivian Holt, who moves to the nearby village and begins to volunteer as a nurse’s aide at the manor. Mourning the death of her soldier husband, Vivian finds solace in her new friendship with one of the older patients, Norman Winter, someone who has served his country in both world wars. Slowly, Vivian’s heart begins to heal, only to be torn apart when she arrives for work one day to be told that Norman is dead.

It seems a straightforward death, but is it? Why did a particular photograph disappear from Norman’s possessions after his death? Who is the sinister figure who keeps following Vivian? Suspicion and doubts begin to grow and when another death occurs, Vivian begins to realise that the war may be over but the real battle is just beginning…

So, true story, I almost caused an accident reading this novella. I read during my subway commute and I had JUST gotten to the denouement of the story when my stop was coming up. I have a ten minute walk to my place after leaving station, so I pulled out my Kindle and kept reading as I walked. Not the smartest idea in busy NYC streets, but I am nothing if not willing to throw my life away for a good book. So I got to the big moment in the middle of the crosswalk and kind of stopped to absorb it. And the light changed. And I was in the middle of the street. Yeah.

If that doesn't tell how much I enjoyed this book, nothing will. It's a really terrific series if you like historic mysteries. And being a series of novellas, it's great for a little escapism that fits into a busy day. (Or a long train ride.) The novellas all take place at Asharton Manor, but occur at different points in history. I believe the author said they would go up to modern day; this one occurs in the late 1940s and the first novella, Death at the Manor (The Asharton Manor Mysteries Book 1), occurs in the late 20s. I have a personal affinity for stories set in years between turn of century and the 50s so these most certainly appeal to me. But I can't wait until the next installment, no matter the time period, and I will love to see how Asharton, as a character, evolves in time.

The first novella was more of a straight ahead whodunnit, and while this story is still a mystery there is more of a suspense/thriller edge to it. I love both approaches, and this one was executed just as well as the first. I like that you really grow to care for and develop an interest in the characters in so short a space. Very well realized people. Asharton Manor itself, and the land surrounding it, has somewhat of a dark history that really adds some additional ambiance to the setting. This history is explained in the first novella, and while they can definitely be read as stand alone independent stories, knowing the backstory of the manor - especially the forest it sits in - really added tension to some of the moments. Vivian, the main character, makes a startling discovery among the trees in this story and I kept thinking back to the creepy story one of the characters in Death in a Manor told about the woods. The scene works perfectly well on its own, but that knowledge added a little heft. So though it's not absolutely necessary I would recommend reading them in order.

As the mystery goes, I think the author handles it very deftly. For such a short piece, there is a lot of intricacy to the mystery itself and nothing is obvious. What I like is that though things are suspicious and unclear, they start to fall in place and there are no red herrings just for the sake of red herrings, nor any information denied the reader. You may figure out who the "culprit" is, but I think, if you do, you come to in the same time as the character because all the little pieces start to fall in place in a satisfying way. Like the other story, I want to know more about what happens to Vivian so I wonder if she or bits of her story/legacy will feed into the next jump in time. I look forward to it if so.

Highly recommend. And if you are new to short stories/novellas in the traditional mystery type, these are a great place to start because they are complete small mysteries, not lean on intellect, mood or story at all.

Love English writing, a little long on detail though.
I am not a fan of these short versions. I like depth and I much prefer the longer more involved plots. A bit lightweight for me. That said I do like Celina Grace's books
I like this author and am now reading more of her books.
Celina Grace's second mystery set at Asharton Manor is a sleek, elegant affair. The first-person narration is engaging and sensitive - Vivian Holt is an appealing, well-developed heroine, and her struggles and adjustments after her husband's death are moving. Grace crafts a cunningly clever plot, and she peoples it with intriguing, economically-drawn characters. This short mystery is in the very best Agatha Christie tradition, but Grace has a voice of her own.
Loved the story, loved the carachters, wished the story was longer. The clues were all there and very cleverly disclosed, although I did find it a bit disconcerting that Mrs. Holt arrived so suddenly at the answer. Maybe a few more "red herrings" would flesh it out a little more. I was also very, very glad to see proper grammar, no misspelled words and the somewhat poor editing that usually defines an indie story or novel. Well done!
A Prescription for Death is another terrific book by Celina Grace! This short story was filled with great characters and a surprise ending.

Ms. Grace really captures the post World War II period in Europe generally and in England in particular—how it took many years to move past the War!

I look forward to the next installment in the Asharton Manor series!

Read the book to get the whole story—it will be worth the time!
I enjoy reading series of books in the order that they are written in order to follow the development of the characters. In this series, you aren't following the characters, you are following the old Victorian manor in which the stories take place. The manor is now a post-war convalescent facility for WWII soldiers. Vivian Holt is a volunteer there after the death of her husband in the war, and she meets Norman, a patient who has lost his leg in this, the second war in which he has served for his country. But he mysteriously dies one night from what has been determined to be a suicide, but Vivian just knows in her heart that this couldn't be the case. The story moves quickly, and I read it in one day because I just couldn't put it down. Celina Grace has a knack for writing mystery books, and this is another good read from this author!
